Water Hyacinth
Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes), is a free-floating perennial aquatic plant with bulbous bases from which thick glossy leaves grow out. It is known for the purpleish-pink flowers that will grow from it. The feathery roots of this plant provide shade for fish in the pond, while at the same time absorbing any excess nutrients in your pond.
Care & Maintenance
Water hyacinth thrive in full sun and warmer temperatures. In Colorado they are considered an annual, but you will find them as perennials in warmer areas.Β Since they are considered an invasive plant, they could take over your pond. You can prevent this by keeping them in a floating ring or by thinning them as needed.
If you find that the leaves on your hyacinth are turning yellow, you can take them out of the pond and put them into a bucket with aquatic fertillizer for a few days. Make sure to rinse them off thoroughly before returning to your pond.
